How to Plant a Wood
The following pictures were taken in South West Scotland in December 2004, when Alistair McConnachie and friends planted a 3-acre woodland in Galloway.

After driving in the wooden stakes, "scrief" a section of turf, the width of the spade, above.

After scriefing, dig a small hole approximately 8" deep, above right.

Plant the tree and pack soil around it firmly, above right.

Place tree-guard carefully over the plant, taking care not to trap the shoots of the tree under the plastic straps of the guard. Tighten straps around the stake, and then replace the turf upside down, to avoid the grass competing with the young tree.
