PRO-REFERENDUM RALLY in LONDON
27 October 2007

Some speakers at Rally

Report and pictures by Alistair McConnachie
(Posted 28 Oct 2007):

Saturday 27th October saw a Pro-Referendum Rally "in support of British Democracy and against the creation of an undemocratic EU superstate." Organised largely by Bob Spink, the Conservative MP for Castle Point, in Essex, the event saw a crowd of around 500 (we counted it 3 times) congregate from 12 noon to 1.30pm.

Above: A photocall for some of the speakers and organisers. From left: Unknown woman and child (contact us!) Roger Helmer MEP, Daniel Hannan MEP, Tom Wise MEP, Organiser Bob Spink MP, Nigel Farage MEP, Jens-Peter Bonde MEP, Unknown, Neil Herron. Also speaking, but not shown in this picture, was Cllr Steve Radford.

The demonstration wasn't held in Parliament Square, but rather at Old Palace Yard, which is a little further along and directly opposite the House of Lords car park. A statue to King George V stands in the middle of the little square.

Tom Wise's Bus

Tom Wise brought "his bus" which is impressively decorated with the words "EU Constitution? Not Without a Referendum!" It was parked in front of Old Palace Yard and the speakers and others used the open top-deck to address the audience through a megaphone.

Roger Helmer was the next speaker, followed by Daniel Hannan, who gave a clear and well-pronounced speech and stated that we had "come with a message" -- the politicians, are not the owners but the custodians of our democracy, a theme further emphasised by Neil Herron. Denmark MEP Jens-Peter Bonde told us they needed 60 MPs to force a Danish referendum on the Treaty. Neil Herron pointed at Parliament and stated that, "These people are just the custodians of our democracy. It was never theirs to give away." Cllr Steve Radford, for the Liberal Party (the old Liberals) raised one of the biggest cheers of the day when he said he heard all about "Self-determination for the Palestinians" but was wanting to hear more about "Self-determination for the British". Nigel Farage, UKIP MEP stated that "Our enemy is an entire political class…we want our country back and we are going to get our country back."
